Competition Judging

Judging of competitions is a subject of interest to even the newest member of the club.  The Chicago Area Camera Clubs use a scoring system ranging from 4 to 9.  It is sometimes difficult to understand why one image receives a score of 20 (total for three judges) while a very similar image may receive a 24.

The following is taken from "Concepts for Better Judging" by John Mariana.

Score

  Key Points

4

  •  Glaring technical faults
  •  Poor taste
  •  VERY under or over exposed
  •  Very poor focus/depth of field
  •  Color is not correct

5

  •  Some technical problems
  •  Over or under exposed
  •  Out of focus in part of the image
  •  Unintentional shallow depth-of-field
  •  Too much in the image

6

  •  Technically correct
  •  Correct exposure AND
  •  Sharp focus
  •  This is the expected level of proficiency for a competition entry

7

  •  ONLY ONE point above a "6"
  •  Technically correct image
  • Effective and pleasing lighting
  •  Good composition
  •  Good color saturation

8

  •  All of the aspects of a "6" and "7"
  •  Very good composition
  •  Very good color saturation
  •  Very good lighting
  •  IMPACT

9

  • "TOP" score
  • NOT the "perfect" score
  • Excellent composition
  • Excellent color saturation
  • Excellent lighting
  • IMPACT

While these are guidelines proposed by Mr. Mariana, judges may use other, less objective criteria.  Certainly personal taste can influence a judge, as can the "WOW" factor.  The above can serve as some guidance, especially to newer members on what to strive for in reaching the higher levels of scoring. - WHR
